Stations are a big thing in Wigan, we have two railway stations and one bus station and Wigan Wallgate is the most eye-catching of the three.
The red bricks and the wrought iron canopy are a real throwback to a distant era when architecture meant something, it was part of the character of a town.

Of course, for me, the red bricks make it something special, but the ironwork is also quite an attraction, with not only the canopy, but also the points at which it joins the main brickwork - lovely attention to detail.

Here is a closer shot of the detail and craftsmanship of the ironwork and the brickwork with the stone arches over each door and window.

Wigan Wallgate railway station is a prominent feature of the town centre and remains one of its best-loved buildings.
